Square Enix’s online store recently sweetened the deal for customers, offering a branded face mask as a “free” gift with any purchase over $100.
The promotion was announced in an email sent to US fans (via ResetEra) which read: “Boost your vitality +1. Free** Square Enix members face mask with any physical order over $100!”
The mask itself is a simple black cloth design, emblazoned with the Square Enix Members logo (a loyalty program for the publisher’s US store). However, no information was provided about its medical efficacy.
In many countries, wearing a face mask in public is now mandatory to help curb the spread of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has infected millions worldwide and claimed countless lives.
Interestingly, Square Enix launched this promotion on the very same day that the UK government advised the public to wear masks in shops and on public transport. This move aimed to reduce the staggering number of infections in the country.

The Square Enix online shop offers a wide range of products, including physical copies of video games, merchandise, and collectibles. It seems that this promotion was exclusive to the US store, and upon checking today, the promotion appears to have vanished. Eurogamer has reached out to Square Enix for further comment.
