While we’re still eagerly awaiting the grand reveal of the PlayStation 5’s design, Sony has given us a tantalizing glimpse of something we’ll undoubtedly see frequently while gaming—the new branding for its first-party titles. This fresh identity, complete with a stylish animation, is poised to debut alongside the PS5 later this year, marking the games developed and managed by Sony. Although initially intended for the next-gen console, the branding will also encompass PlayStation 4 games. However, it won’t be ready in time for highly anticipated titles like The Last of Us: Part 2 and Ghosts of Tsushima, both scheduled for release this summer.

The new animation has sparked comparisons to the iconic Marvel Studios intro, though Sony executive Eric Lempel clarified to GamesIndustry.biz that the inspiration stems from the games themselves. “We’re all huge Marvel fans, and one of our most successful games features a Marvel character—Spider-Man. However, this branding is specifically tailored to our games and our industry,” he explained.
Lempel elaborated on the flexibility of the brand intro, hinting at potential variations over time. “The initial cinematic showcases multiple games, but as we introduce established franchises, we can customize the opening to feature the evolution of those franchises, new characters, and more. There’s tremendous potential here that we’re excited to explore.”
The creation of the PlayStation Studios brand aims to enhance consumer awareness that the games are made by Sony. “We’ve invested in robust marketing campaigns, but this branding offers a clearer, more unified way for fans to recognize and appreciate our first-party titles,” Lempel added.
While the Marvel comparison is apt, some observers have noted similarities to the Xbox Game Studios animation, unveiled in 2019. Regardless, the PlayStation version is notably briefer, adding a touch of elegance to the experience.
