The PlayStation Store in mainland China has unfortunately been suspended. Currently, there’s no definite word on the reason for its taking offline. The official PlayStation Weibo account says it’s due to a security upgrade, but details are scarce. It went offline without much notice this morning at 7 am, and there’s no indication of when or even if it will resume. Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad tweeted that the PlayStation Store and PSN have been temporarily halted in mainland China as of 7 am on May 10, with no mention of a resumption date. The official reason given is for security upgrades, but what exactly that means is unclear. He further mentioned that an Xbox fanboy had allegedly reported certain elements to authorities that could access overseas services, and it was taken down shortly afterward. He speculated that perhaps the security updates were to investigate possible backdoors for overseas PSN services rather than looking for games that might threaten Chinese policies. There’s currently no evidence of the online store being compromised, and we’ll continue to keep an eye on the situation.
