Borderlands 3 has introduced a novel gun that pays homage to one of Destiny’s renowned weapons.
The gun in question within Borderlands 3 is a legendary assault rifle named Good Juju. Evidently, the name of this firearm is a nod to Destiny’s exotic pulse rifle Bad Juju, a weapon that players of the initial Destiny are quite familiar with. Intriguingly, it also shares numerous perks with Destiny’s Bad Juju. Just like Bad Juju, Good Juju features burst fire. Similarly, it reloads upon a kill. Both guns possess full auto functionality. Even the flavour text of Good Juju makes a reference to Bad Juju.
Good Juju: “Kinda, sorta wants to end all existence.”
Bad Juju: “If you believe your weapon wants to end all existence, then so it will.”
The beauty of this reference lies in it being a virtual handshake between two games that have been regarded as rivals for several years. Destiny, characterized as a shared-world shooter with a strong emphasis on cooperative looting, followed the highly popular co-op looter shooters Borderlands 1 and 2. Now, Borderlands 3 is released at a time when Destiny 2 has already gained a firm footing.
Good Juju.
Bad Juju.
This is not the sole Destiny reference discovered in Borderlands 3. Borderlands 3 boasts a “Loot-o-Gram”, an item that can be utilized to exchange for a weapon. This is a play on Destiny’s engrams. Moreover, the Loot-o-Gram can only be dropped by a rare spawn called Dinkle-Bot, which is the community-bestowed nickname for Destiny’s Ghost character, originally voiced by Peter Dinklage.
The Destiny community has naturally noticed Borderlands 3’s Good Juju, and players are finding it amusing. As far as I know, Destiny does not contain any Borderlands references.
