Another digital card game is making its entrance. Wizards of the Coast has unveiled Magic: The Gathering Arena, a free-to-play title crafted by their in-house Digital Games Studio. Sign-ups are open for a closed beta, and while it’s initially aiming for a PC release, it’ll expand to other platforms when ready. The beta will start with Constructed play, where you can build decks using all 279 cards from the upcoming Magic set Ixalan. They plan to add Draft and Ranked Constructed later. The goal at launch is to include all Standard-legal Magic cards.
The vice president of digital game development, Jeffrey Steefel, notes that the focus of MTG Arena will be on the newest cards and game modes. Because of this, they understand that Magic Online, with its vast library of cards from the game’s history, will continue to offer unique experiences. Development on Magic Online will continue with new card sets and updates.
They’re aiming to have popular MTG Arena streams among the most-viewed on Twitch, and they want players to eagerly anticipate draft nights with friends worldwide and watch pro players’ competitive ladder matches with enthusiasm.
I may not be a MTG player, but it seems like there’s a history here. Are you feeling it?
