“Switch port please”

I really don’t understand the stigma associated with ‘port begging’. Sure, some exclusives are great because without the backing of a specific angel investor, they might not have been made at all. And often, the terms of those deals stipulate that they must remain exclusive. But that doesn’t have to be the case all the time. In many instances, publishers are simply afraid to port to certain devices for sales reasons – the Wii U is proof of that. However, the Switch is doing much better, and at this stage, it arguably has more third-party support than the Wii U ever had (even Rockstar is getting involved, for crying out loud).
This success is also emphasized by Omar Cornut of Lizardcube. He notes that “Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap” has sold more on Switch than “the three other platforms we released on combined”. Several other developers support this sentiment, although they don’t provide the same detailed comparison. It will be interesting to see where the Switch is at the end of next year. Will it surpass the Wii U? Will it ever reach the coveted 100 million sold mark and become a name in the history of all-time bestsellers?
