Developer Tarsier’s original Little Nightmares was an enthralling macabre treat, a masterfully crafted puzzle-platformer that uneasily lingered in a realm between charmingly dark and profoundly disturbing. However, for its latest offering, Little Nightmares 2, which is slated to hit PC and consoles in February next year, the studio has placed a stronger emphasis on the latter aspect.
Though Tarsier labels Little Nightmares 2 as a sequel, the developer has been somewhat evasive when it comes to situating its events within the series’ timeline. Nevertheless, what we are certain of is that it once again features Six – the diminutive figure donned in a yellow raincoat, last seen venturing into the shadowy depths of the Maw in the original. This time, though, she is accompanied by a new companion, Mono.
In this sequel, it is Mono that players take control of – with Six’s actions managed by the AI. The duo sets out on an adventure that, in contrast to its predecessor, frequently occurs in the great outdoors. Yet, given the ever-present fog and shadows that enshroud the offbeat world of Mono and Six, the experience is unlikely to be any less oppressive.
Although the ensuing adventure adheres to a similar fundamental structure as its predecessor, presenting itself as a somber combination of side-scrolling platforming and puzzling, a few novel elements are set to surface. For instance, there will be the opportunity to (rather feebly) brandish items and weapons when the situation calls for it.
And, naturally, Mono and Six will encounter another peculiar assortment of deeply troubled adults – including the freshly unveiled Doctor – many of whom are the focus of Tarsier’s delightfully menacing new trailer.
Little Nightmares 2 is currently slated to make its stealthy entrance onto PS4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC on February 11th next year. A free next-gen upgrade for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will follow at a future date that is yet to be determined. And if you’re eager to learn more, you might be able to glean a few additional hints from Emma’s interview with Tarsier from late last year.
