Stephen Russell, the remarkable voice behind the Thief protagonist Garrett, has enthusiastically signed up to contribute to Underworld Ascendant.
Stephen L. Russell gave life to Garrett, the original Thief.
Back in the late 90s, Russell collaborated with the influential developer Looking Glass, lending his voice to characters in Thief, Thief 2, and System Shock 2. Underworld Ascendant is the crowdfunded fantasy role-playing game crafted by Ultima Underworld designer Paul Neurath, who also founded Looking Glass.
Thief enthusiasts were disheartened to discover that Russell wouldn’t be reprising his role as Garrett in the recent Thief reboot, developed by Eidos Montreal and published by Square Enix.
Meanwhile, the celebration of the Looking Glass legacy persists. Terri Brosius, who served as a designer and provided the voices for Shodan and Delacroix in the System Shock series, as well as Viktoria in the Thief series, is also lending her talents to Underworld Ascendant.
Underworld Ascendant is touted as the next-generation sequel to both Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld 2. Neurath has joined hands with some of the developers from the original Underworld games, such as designer Tim Stellmach, to establish the new independent studio Otherside Entertainment.
The Underworld Ascendant Kickstarter campaign is yet to reach its $600,000 goal, but it appears to be on the verge of achieving it. At the time of this writing, $459,401 has been collected from 8321 backers, with 17 days remaining.
