In “Loving, Ohio” by Matthew Erman and Sam Beck, a teen scary graphic novel, the concept of being stuck in one’s youth town is scarier than a knife-armed serial killer. The story follows 4 teenagers– Sloane, Cameron, Elliott, and Ana– who are handling a pal’s suicide and a series of teen disappearances connected to a regional spiritual company and a fatal killer. Influenced by “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” David Lynch movies, and music, along with Erman’s own cult experience, the book weaves in between teenager small talk and minutes of scary, from ordinary high school fear to surreal violence. Among Polygon’s must-read summer season books, it has plenty of deliberate secrets. As Erman states, “Embrace the secret.” Have a look at a special six-page excerpt thanks to Dark Horse Comics.
