Call me conceited, but appearance does matter – and goodness gracious, Blasphemous, a freshly Kickstarted 2D metroidvania, is a stunner!
Didn’t I spot this fellow in the Bloodborne DLC?
Having effortlessly surpassed its $50k Kickstarter goal within just a single day, it comes as no surprise why. The retro 2D sidescroller’s promotional trailer encapsulates the pure astonishment and heart-stopping terror that the Castlevania series achieved during its prime.
Certainly, the pixelated sprites serve as a nostalgic throwback, yet Blasphemous’ enchanting scenery and ingenious demon design are as disgustingly evocative as any offerings in the current market. Much like Hyper Light Drifter and Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery before it, Blasphemous utilizes its grainy medium to stir up awe in a manner that would potentially get lost in a more modern, representational aesthetic.

It also boasts a respectable background, as the developer The Game Kitchen’s previous endeavor, The Last Door, was a rather critically acclaimed eerie point-and-click adventure. The query is whether those skills can be translated into a real-time action game.
Oh dear!
That could go in either direction, of course, and all we can do presently is fantasize about the potential of the game Blasphemous could ultimately become. Right now, I’m more than content to do precisely that. I mean, just take a look at this!
Currently, Blasphemous is scheduled for a release on PC, Mac, and Linux. However, if it reaches sufficient stretch goals, it will also receive a console release with PS4, Xbox One, and Switch all in the pipeline.
Given its remarkable success thus far, it appears highly probable that this will occur. At present, it has raised $63,789 with 28 days remaining until its June 21st deadline.
Blasphemous is still some time away, with The Game Kitchen aiming for an estimated launch in the first quarter of 2019. You can pre-order a copy now for $20 (or the equivalent in your local currency).
