The developer of The Binding of Isaac, Edmund McMillen, has unveiled an eight-minute co-op footage for the forthcoming PlayStation port and enhanced PC edition of his horror comedy action-roguelike game.
Titled The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, this console port was initially intended to be a 16-bit demake of the 2011 cult classic. However, McMillen and the team at Nicalis ultimately chose a different visual direction and continuously added more and more content to this impending edition. Among its most thrilling enhancements is the addition of co-op.
An intriguing aspect of Rebirth’s co-op is that players must sacrifice some of their life to bring a friend into the game. Thus, it won’t merely be an easier version with double the manpower. In certain ways, the second player has the advantage of being able to fly, but player one is the sole one who can pick up and utilize items, and they control which rooms the duo enters.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth also boasts all-new Challenge Modes where you are restricted by specific criteria. For instance, in the Head Trauma mode, instead of shooting powerful tears in one direction, you are surrounded by a thick barrier of hail-like mini-tears that occupy a significant amount of space but inflict low damage.
This video also showcases an entirely new boss: Dingle, a literal piece of excrement.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is slated to be a free release for PlayStation Plus members on PS4 and Vita. The game still lacks a launch window, but McMillen confirmed to Eurogamer today that “it should be released before the end of the year,” and a release date will be disclosed shortly.
Last November, Nicalis mentioned that Rebirth would be released first on PS4, with the Vita version to follow a few months later, offering cross-platform support on Sony systems.
