Earlier this week, the developers of The Witcher made a confirmation that put an end to previous suspicions – the enigmatic medallion partially concealed and buried in the snow in CD Projekt Red’s recent Witcher announcement is undoubtedly that of a Lynx.
However, prior to this affirmation, the School of the Lynx only existed in fan fiction. But now, it seems that CDPR was inspired by its Witcher community, and as a consequence, is incorporating this new school into its video game series.
So, we have an inkling of how CDPR came up with its version of the School of the Lynx, but what about the creators of the fan fiction project themselves?
Speaking to Eurogamer, the author of the School of the Lynx, SMiki55, provided more insights into how they crafted the story behind their piece of Witcher lore.
“The seeds were sown by Witcher190, who discovered the medallion fanart and created a ‘School of the Lynx’ page that essentially stated, ‘this article is open for anyone to edit’. The medallion looked fascinating, and it somehow spurred me to concoct a story for it,” SMiki55 remarks.
“Lynx, of course, is a feline species, and we know from official sources that the seat of the School of the Cat was seized by unspecified soldiers.
“Lambert and Keira entered the picture because I’m a fan of their potential romantic relationship and wanted to give them something to do after their happy ending in The Witcher 3. Thus, I wove a tale about how Lambert, Keira, Gaetan, Joel, and Adela (a character from The Hexer TV series, later replaced by Witcher190 with Dragonfly from TRPG) joined forces to reclaim the Cat caravan from Nilfgaardian soldiers with courage and luck.
“Witcher190 then came up with further particulars and continued the story with the tournament and so forth. Some ideas were discussed jointly via private messages.”
SMiki55 was eager to emphasize that they didn’t believe CDPR was adapting their fan fiction, though.
“We [the fanfiction writers] don’t assert ownership over terms like ‘School of the [insert animal here]’ and anyone is entirely free to create their own Witcher school without considering our ideas – including CD Projekt,” SMiki55 asserts.
