Doom Eternal’s first single-player expansion, The Ancient Gods, Part One, is set to be accessible as a standalone game. This implies that players can delve into the new DLC – which is a part of Doom Eternal’s Year One Pass and takes you on a journey to new realms in the Doom universe, where you’ll encounter fresh enemies – even if they don’t possess the base game or haven’t completed the main campaign.
This means that a significant portion of players who have experienced the game – a percentage higher than that of 2016 – have completed it, as executive producer Marty Stratton told PCGamesN. “When we examine how many people have played through the game, we see a large percentage – higher than in 2016 – that have completed it. It’s crucial as we aim for the DLC to reach as many individuals as feasible. In fact, you don’t even need to own Doom Eternal to purchase the DLC and play it.”
Bethesda celebrated the launch of Doom Eternal by announcing that it achieved the series’ best-ever opening week sales. In the UK, stores began selling boxed copies of Doom Eternal early in an attempt to move stock before stores were closed due to the pandemic lockdown. Intriguingly, though, the physical sales of the boxed version of Doom Eternal were down by approximately a third compared to those of Doom’s 2016 reboot. However, it’s likely that the increase in digital console sales compensated for a large part of this.
In Eurogamer’s Doom Eternal review, Edwin regarded the game as “an even faster and bloodier yet slightly erratic successor to a thunderous shooter reboot”.
The Ancient Gods Part One is slated for release on October 20th, 2020.
