I reckon it’s fairly safe to state that the majority wouldn’t exactly label Starfield as a downright bad game. It did have its moments, yet generally it’s rather “meh.” Even if one does genuinely like it, it surely falls far short of what Todd Howard (and, indeed, Bethesda as a whole) was striving for in terms of the next big thing from the Skyrim studio. However, the development team is remaining committed to it, and the very first major DLC for the game is set to arrive shortly. Shattered Space (which is set to launch on September 30) will feature a shorter yet more focused narrative, while also leaning towards a horror-infused vibe. According to a recent post on Xbox Wire, it’ll resemble the classic style of Bethesda.
While we should always exercise caution when it comes to marketing hype, it has been suggested that this DLC will be more in line with the likes of the expansions for Elder Scrolls and Fallout. More specifically, Shattered Space will be a self-contained story that experiments with tones and mechanics that the main game didn’t explore. We’ll have to see for ourselves what that truly means.
To boldly go
I must confess, I do quite like the look of the trailer, though I can’t help but detect a faint hint of Prey within it. And that’s not a bad thing by any means. We won’t truly know how excellent the DLC is until it actually makes its debut, so it’s difficult to say whether it’ll provide a bit of a boost to Starfield as a whole.
It’s a pity that it didn’t quite live up to expectations. Currently, the game is displaying a “mixed” rating in reviews on Steam. As I said, it’s not bad. It’s just not outstanding either. For many, including myself, the interest gradually waned. Considering that the story was supposed to revolve around humanity’s quest for the grandest answers in the universe, it was somewhat forgettable.
Visually, Starfield is quite spectacular, and it’s one of the least egregious Bethesda games in terms of bugs. However, that’s not the claim the studio likely envisions it to be. Skyrim is riddled with glitches, yet it remains one of the most consistently enjoyable and successful RPGs in recent memory.
Shattered Space could potentially infuse Starfield with new life if it has a tightly crafted story that keeps players hooked. I mean, at the moment, SteamDB shows that the game is currently at position 153 (ironically, one above Fallout 76 at the time of writing) in terms of the most played games on PC. I understand that it’s been out for nearly a year now, but that’s not what many of us were anticipating for a sci-fi epic that had been in the making for 25 years.
