Abandon Ship is a game that combines the elements of Sid Meier’s Pirates and FTL, and it has been on my radar for some time. Recently, the developers released a new gameplay video that focuses on exploration, making Abandon Ship even more appealing.
In the video, we see how players navigate the map, which is bordered by a picture frame inspired by the classic naval oil painting style of the game’s art. You can uncover the fog of war on a virtual canvas, discover events and ports, and access new areas by unlocking locked gates after completing a specific number of events. Fireblade Software stated that procedural generation determines the exploration maps’ placement and routes within a region, as well as the islands, ports, events, and environmental modifiers. While the main story nudges players towards certain locations, you have the freedom to explore.
Each region has a unique theme. Uncharted regions have fewer ports, making exploration more dangerous. Some regions have active volcanoes that can impact combat.
Abandon Ship first grabbed my attention due to its FTL-style combat, and this new video once again delves into how you engage in battles. If your ship is destroyed, the Captain is left stranded with diminishing health. If the Captain makes it to a lifeboat, you must contend with dwindling supplies and morale. Survive long enough, and you will be picked up by another ship, allowing you to continue the game.
Abandon Ship is set to be released later this year for PC, and it remains on my list of must-watch games.
